Suspect Arrested in Seward Murder Investigation
Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have officially arrested Casey Kindt for the murder of Jamie Hagen, which occurred last Saturday night, February 8, in Seward. Kindt remains in critical but stable condition at UNMC in Omaha.
This morning at approximately 6:00 a.m., troopers served an arrest warrant on Kindt for the charges of first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, burglary, and child abuse. The arrest warrant was issued in Seward County following a homicide investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol.
Saturday, February 8, at approximately 11:46 p.m., the Seward Police Department responded to a report of a burglary at a residence at 605 N. 2nd Street, Apartment 2, in Seward. Officers knew the residence to be that of Jamie Hagen and were aware that Hagen had an active protection order against Casey Kindt.
Upon arrival, officers located Kindt, who had sustained significant injuries to his face from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers located a handgun in Kindt’s possession. They then located Hagen in a bedroom, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.
Officers also located Hagen’s daughter, who had locked herself in another room for protection. Hagen’s daughter was taken into protective care and has since been reunited with family.
Kindt was placed in custody and transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. Troopers have been guarding Kindt’s hospital room since early Sunday morning. His custody will now be transferred to the Seward County Jail, though he will remain at UNMC. As of this morning, Kindt’s injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.
The Nebraska State Patrol has been assisted by the Seward Police Department, Seward County Sheriff’s Office, and Seward County Attorney’s Office during this investigation.
