How to Apply/Renew/Update Name & Address

CHP Initial Applications:
Current permit holders wishing to renew a permit to carry a concealed handgun may do so anytime within four (4) months prior to the expiration of their current permit or within 30 business days after the expiration of their permit. After the thirty business days have passed, the permit holder will need to start the process over as if requesting an initial permit. This includes taking the training course again, providing all the necessary documentation, and paying the $100 initial permit fee.
- Completed, signed and notarized application form
- Proof of training - Original or certified copy of Certificate of Completion of a Handgun Training and Safety Course approved by the Nebraska State Patrol
- Proof of vision - only needed if presenting a state issued ID card
- Proof of identification - Current NE driver's license, NE state issued ID or current military ID
- Proof of citizenship or legal/lawful status in the United States - Certified state issued birth certificate, naturalization papers, certificate of citizenship from immigration authorities, current or expired United States passport, Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Card, Visa, or an I-94 admission number
- Please note: If the name listed on the application does not match the name on the proof of citizenship provided, legal documentation showing name change (such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order) may be required.
- Proof of address - (the address on the application must match the provided documentation) Current NE driver's license or NE state issued ID, active military duty station orders, or one of the following items: utility bill, bank statement, valid Nebraska vehicle registration, Nebraska voter registration card, pay stub or earnings statement, mortgage or lease agreement or tax documents issued at least 180 days prior to application date
- Applicable Fee - $100.00, cash or check. The fee may be paid using a credit or debit card or e-check online for an additional fee of $4.50.
- Fingerprints and Photographs taken at the time of application submittal
CHP Renewal Applications:

A permit may be renewed no later than thirty business days after the date of expiration of the permit. After the thirty business days have passed, the permit holder will need to start the process over as if requesting an initial permit. This includes taking the training course again, providing all the necessary documentation, and paying the $100 initial permit fee.

Update Name or Address on CHP:
No appointment is necessary for a personal data change. Send the following information via email to nsp.chp@nebraska.gov, by mail to the Criminal Identification Division in Lincoln, or deliver the application to any NSP Troop Area office.
- Complete and signed application form
- The application does NOT have to be notarized
- Proof of identification - Current NE driver's license, NE state issued ID or current military ID
- Must contain updated name and/or address. Make the changes with the DMV first, wait approximately 2-3 business days, and then submit an application to update your CHP.
- State issued temporary license is acceptable
- Copy of current CHP

Documentation need for Concealed Firearm Instructor:
Per Title 272, Nebraska Administrative Code, Chapter 21, you must appear in person when applying for an initial or renewal instructor certification. The following information is required:
- Completed, signed, and notarized application form
- Proof of identification – Current driver’s license, state issued ID card, and/or currently military ID
- Proof of citizenship or legal/lawful status in the United States – Certified state issued birth certificate, current or expired U.S. passport, naturalization papers, certificate of citizenship from immigration authorities, Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Card, Visa, or an I-94 admission number
- A notarized Firearms Instructor Certification to teach handgun courses
- A current Firearms Purchase Certificate under Neb. Rev. Stat. 69-2401 to 69-2409, a current permit issued under the Concealed Handgun Permit Act, or a current Federal Firearms License issued by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives
- Proposed course curriculum
- $15.50 criminal history check fee
- Fingerprints and photograph taken at the time of application submission
CHP and Instructor applicants must present a completed application form and necessary documentation in person. An appointment is required. A list of locations and times can be found on the Concealed Handgun Information page of the NSP website.
