Husker Game Ball Handoff

As the Huskers return to Memorial Stadium for the first home game of the season, the Nebraska State Patrol is urging fans to have a safe game plan for Husker Saturdays this year.

Tuesday morning, Colonel Bryan Waugh kicked off a statewide campaign to promote safe travel for Husker home games. Throughout the week, troopers will hand off the Huskers’ game ball in communities across the state, to demonstrate the teamwork necessary to make gameday travel safe for all fans. The football will travel across Nebraska, finishing the relay when a trooper delivers the Huskers’ game ball to Memorial Stadium ahead of Saturday’s game.

“For every Husker game, safety on the roads in and around Lincoln is our major priority,” said Colonel Waugh. “We also need your help to make sure we have a safe season. To help get the fans on board, we’re going to have troopers delivering the game ball on Saturday for the game against Akron.”

NSP encourages all fans to have a gameday game plan.

  • Know Before You Go – Check 511 Nebraska so you’re aware of construction zones that may affect your travel. There are several I-80 work zones across the state with reduced speed limits.
  • Have Good Vision – Put the phone down and always keep an eye out for pedestrians. The Lincoln Police Department will be directing traffic in downtown Lincoln. Follow officers’ directions and be mindful of the thousands of fans making their way to the game.
  • Designate a Sober Driver – This is the first season for alcohol sales at Husker football games. Plan ahead and make sure you have a sober driver. Don’t let a poor decision ruin gameday. Always have a sober driver.

The game ball will travel across all six NSP troop areas, starting in Omaha and finishing in Lincoln. Fans can follow the game ball’s trip around the state on NSP’s social media pages.
