Troopers Close Summer Travel Season with Drive Sober Campaign
The summer driving season is rolling to a stop and the Nebraska State Patrol is working to keep roadways safe.
Troopers throughout Nebraska will be working overtime for the next few weeks as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of serious injury or fatality crashes related to impaired driving or other dangerous driving behaviors.
“The end of summer brings several high traffic events,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “From kids going back to school, to the State Fair, to the start of Husker football and volleyball, the next few weeks will include increased traffic in many areas of the state.”
This effort will include troopers in every part of Nebraska. Since Memorial Day, troopers have arrested 318 people for driving under the influence. That’s an average of four impaired driving arrests per day this summer.
“Every DUI arrest has the potential of saving lives,” said Colonel Waugh. “Our troopers are always on patrol for dangerous driving behavior, but the best way to prevent a roadway tragedy is for all motorists to drive safely. Always drive sober, put down the phone, watch your speed, and buckle up.”
The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign runs from August 16 through September 1. This effort is made possible thanks in part to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.
