Update on Columbus Police Officer-Involved Shooting

The Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team is investigating a Columbus Police Department officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., NSP was requested to investigate an incident in which a Columbus Police Department officer was injured, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary investigation shows that while Columbus PD officers were conducting an investigation in the 3000 block of 13th Street, a female subject attacked one of the officers with a knife, injuring the officer. Another officer then discharged a firearm, striking the female subject.

Officers attempted life-saving measures, but the female subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. The injured officer was taken to the hospital and was treated and released.

The Columbus Police Department requested NSP to investigate the incident. That investigation is ongoing. In accordance with Nebraska law, this will be a grand jury investigation.
