Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division conducted surprise commercial vehicle inspections today, Thursday, May 24, in Douglas County. The surprise inspections target commercial vehicles that might not travel outside the city or pass through weight stations as part of their regular routes.

During the special enforcement effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted 74 vehicle inspections, discovered 339 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law, and took 33 vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road). Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that post immediate safety risks. Troopers also placed 10 drivers out of service for no CDL (3), no driver’s license (5), and CDL restriction violations (2) Troopers also issued $6,375 in citations and cited one driver for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The MAPS Team conducted three days of surprise inspections this week, with more scheduled from the spring through fall in cities and towns across Nebraska.

Inspections this week, in Lincoln, Sarpy County, and Omaha, included a total of 266 inspections, the discovery of 913 violations, and the placement of 106 vehicles out of service. Troopers also placed 28 drivers out of service for various violations and issued $19,235 in citations.

The MAPS Team in funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels, and permits associated with commercial vehicles. The MAPS Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division. On average, 20-24 troopers work each MAPS event.
