Troopers from across the United States gathered in Nebraska this week for specialized training on commercial vehicle inspections, hosted by the Nebraska State Patrol. NSP Carrier Enforcement Troopers helped train troopers and officers from ten states.
For over a decade, the Nebraska State Patrol has provided training in post-crash commercial vehicle inspections. These inspections help to determine if mechanical failures or safety issues with a commercial vehicle or driver contributed to the crash. The training is held at the Keaney Volunteer Fire Department Training Center.
“This week of training is critical,” said Captain Mike Maytum, commander of the NSP Carrier Enforcement Division. “Our troopers are experts in the field of post-crash inspections and have been called-upon year after year to share that knowledge with commercial vehicle inspectors from across the country. The scenario-based training is designed specifically to recreate situations our troopers have experienced.”
This year’s training included 24 troopers and officers from states as far away as Idaho and New Hampshire. The training sessions provided both classroom and hands-on instruction in areas of forensic examination of commercial motor vehicles, as well as completion of post-crash inspections of commercial motor vehicles.
“Providing this training to troopers from across the country is a point of pride for our Carrier Enforcement Division,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Sharing our troopers’ knowledge and expertise with other agencies makes roadways safer across the entire country. Nebraskans should be proud that agencies from across the United States come to your Nebraska State Patrol to receive this training.”
NSP received assistance from several local partners to make this training as valuable as possible. Thank you to the Nebraska Trucking Association, Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, Crete Carrier Corp., Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, Randy and Brian’s Towing, Dowhy Towing, Carney Towing, Great West Casualty Insurance, Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, Nebraska Department of Transportation, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for their partnership in this training.
