Educational Efforts to Get Teen Drivers
Buckled Up Continues

(Lincoln, Neb.)- The Nebraska State Patrol believes enforcement and education go hand in hand as a way of reducing the potential for serious injury and fatality crashes involving youthful drivers.

During the first three months of 2016, troopers utilized the Rollover Simulator, Seat Belt Convincer and Driving Simulator to conduct safety programs at more than 100 locations across the state reaching some 18,000 people with the message that seat belts save lives, always buckle up.

Beginning in April and running through June, the Nebraska State Patrol will again utilize grant funding from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS) to provide educational programs focusing on seat belts and teen drivers.

According to the Nebraska Strategic Highway Safety Plan teen drivers between 16-20 years of age represents the highest number of unbelted fatalities. More than half of young drivers involved in a fatal crash were not wearing seat belts.

“We are coming up on a very busy time of the year for our teen drivers,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Schwarten. “With proms, graduations and summer celebrations, we hope to reach out to as many groups as possible in an effort to drive home the important role seat belts play in saving lives.”
