October 27, 2016 (Lincoln, Neb.)  —Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted 727 inspections during participation in the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) “Operation Safe Driver”.

During the week-long enforcement (Oct. 16-22), 28 drivers and 49 vehicles were placed out-of-service. Drivers were placed out-of-service (not allowed to continue driving) for violations to include, hours of service and suspended or expired driver’s license. Vehicles were placed out of service (not allowed to continue on the road) for violations to include bad brakes, or tires or other problems that pose immediate safety risks.

In addition to the inspections, troopers issued 1,731 citations and warning to drivers of both commercial vehicles and non–commercial motor vehicles. Citations and warnings were issued for violations to include speeding (887), failure to obey a traffic control device (50), improper turn (14) and no seat belt (60).

“We all know distractions when driving can have deadly consequences,” said Captain Gerry Krolikowski, Carrier Enforcement Division Commander. “With that in mind, we are focusing on distracted driving and texting in commercial motor vehicles.”

During Operation Safe Driver, 20 citations and 13 warnings for use of a mobile communication device or texting were issued statewide. In conjunction with Operation Safe Driver, August 1, through Oct. 15, Carrier Enforcement troopers in Troop D-North Platte issued 40 citations and nine warnings for use of a mobile communication device or texting in a CMV. For CMV drivers, use of a mobile communication device and/or texting, is both a primary offense (§60-6,179.02) and a violation of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 390.17.###
