New NSP Crime Lab Open for Business

(Lincoln, Neb.)- The Nebraska State Patrol’s new Crime Laboratory is open for business.

Ground was broken on the roughly $9,000,000 building built by the Lincoln Airport Authority in August of 2014. The Nebraska State Patrol will reimburse the Lincoln Airport Authority for the facility through a long term lease.  Crime Lab staff completed their move into the new 28,000 square-foot facility the end of October 2015.

“Our crime lab staff has worked extremely hard and is very excited to be settled into its new home,” said Colonel Bradley Rice, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We want to thank our state and community partners for making this move possible.”

The new facility located in Lincoln’s Airpark more than doubled the size of the old NSP Crime Lab. In operation since 1973, the Crime Lab is a full-service internationally accredited forensic laboratory, providing its services free of charge to all local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in Nebraska.

Governor Pete Ricketts said, “The Nebraska State Patrol Crime Laboratory is a valuable resource for our state’s law enforcement and protecting public safety. This new state-of-the-art facility will allow the Crime Lab staff to increase its efficiency and better manage its workload, which will in turn help law enforcement to solve crimes and put criminal behind bars.”

The Crime Lab works an average of 4,000 cases and serves 160 different agencies a year. The Lab’s 26 employees provide evidence analysis and testing in the areas of Latent Prints, Biology/DNA, Toxicology, Drug Chemistry and Trace Evidence and Firearms/Toolmarks/Shoe & Tire examination.

Colonel Bradley Rice said, “This new state-of-the-art facility will allow our crime lab staff to continue to provide quality lab services to law enforcement across the state.” ###
